Game Mechanics
Bidding System
The bidding system is the heart of Spades. Each player bids the number of tricks they think they'll win. Bids range from 0 (nil) to 13. The total bid cannot equal 13 - if all other players bid before you and the total is 13, you must bid at least 1.
Making your bid earns 10 points per trick plus a 10-point bonus. Missing your bid loses 10 points per trick you missed by. Bidding nil (0) and making it earns 100 points, but failing loses 100 points. The bidding system adds a layer of strategy that makes each hand exciting.
Trick-Taking Rules
Spades follows standard trick-taking rules with a twist - spades are always trump. Each player must follow suit if they have a card of the led suit. If they don't have the led suit, they can play any card including spades. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick, unless spades were played, in which case the highest spade wins.
Spades cannot be led until they've been broken (played on another suit). This rule prevents players from immediately playing their spades and forces them to play other suits first. Understanding this rule is crucial for strategic play.
Scoring System
The scoring system rewards accuracy and penalizes overbidding. Teams earn points for making their bids and lose points for missing them. The first team to reach 500 points wins the game. Some variations use different target scores, but 500 is standard.
Nil bids are high-risk, high-reward. Successfully bidding nil and making it gives your team a huge boost, but failing can be devastating. This adds excitement to the game and makes each bidding round tense and strategic.

Play for fun without ranking pressure.
Ranked Mode
